Another way to promote comfort during pregnancy and beyond is through chiropractic care. During pregnancy, the body releases a hormone called relaxin. This helps the pelvis’s elasticity, allowing it to stretch and widen for the baby’s passage. Unfortunately, this hormone is not target-specific and affects the entire body, which can cause pain in the back, pelvis, and joints. You may believe that there is nothing you can do to minimize these discomforts. Fortunately, this isn’t true! Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help minimize nausea, relieve joint, neck, and back pain, and help your body compensate for changes to your posture that naturally occur during pregnancy. Regular chiropractic care can also help ensure the baby has adequate growing room, decreasing the risk of premature birth. Chiropractic care can help alleviate symptoms of head colds and sinus related issues, eliminating the need for medications during pregnancy. This is true not just for adults, but for babies and children as well!
Receiving regular care from a chiropractor can help align the pelvis to allow the baby to get in the optimal position for birth, and your labor can be shorter and less painful. A posterior (backwards) presentation increases your likelihood of having cesarean surgery, as well as causing intense, painful back labor. If your baby is breech, a chiropractor trained to perform the Webster Technique can help her turn head-down. Since most obstetricians and midwives are unwilling or unable to assist with a vaginal breech birth, this specific type of chiropractic adjustment, along with regular chiropractic care, can help you avoid an unnecessary cesarean surgery.
During your pregnancy, your body will go through many changes as it compensates for the extra 35 pounds (average) that you’re carrying. Once the baby is born, it takes time for your body to return to normal. Chiropractic care can help ease and speed your transition back to your normal, non-pregnant state. You may consider having your new baby adjusted as well. Chiropractic care for babies is a gentle process, helping your newborn recover from any birth trauma, and reducing the symptoms of colic. Children who are adjusted regularly may be healthier in general, contracting fewer illnesses and showing improved immune function.
